  • Every field translated, including the notes recorded on the certificate.
  • Names exactly as on the certificate, in the same spelling and order.
  • The translator's NAATI stamp and certification statement, showing who translated it and their NAATI credential.

When Home Affairs asks for one

Home Affairs may ask for a police certificate from every country where you lived for at least 12 months in the past 10 years since you turned 16. Some visas, such as the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), ask for them when you apply. Certificates are valid for 12 months from the date of issue.

What Home Affairs asks

Bulletin n°3

Home Affairs' instructions for France name the extract from police records (Extrait du casier judiciaire, bulletin n°3) from the national criminal record office in Nantes. There is no fee.

From Australia

Online, in hours

Request it on the Ministry of Justice's website. With FranceConnect it arrives within an hour to 24 hours; by email in about 2 working days; by post in about 2 weeks. If you were born outside France and do not use FranceConnect, attach a copy of your ID.

Any nationality

Not only French citizens

Service-Public says the bulletin n°3 can be issued whatever your nationality, so former residents of France can request it too.

What Home Affairs asks of a translation

From the Department of Home Affairs' guidance on documents in languages other than English:

  • Provide the original document together with the English translation.
  • In Australia, use a translator accredited by NAATI.
  • Include the translator's full name, address and telephone number, and qualifications and experience in the language, all in English.

Our certified translations carry the translator's NAATI stamp and certification statement, on our letterhead with our address and telephone number.

What to send us
  • The official certificate as a PDF, or a clear colour scan where every line is readable.
  • Every page in one file, including the apostille if there is one.
  • Any spelling your names must match on your passport, written in the comments box.
  • The certificate exactly as issued, every page, including any apostille.
Questions

Frequently asked questions

My name is spelled differently on my passport. What happens?

A certified translation reproduces names exactly as they are written on the certificate. If your passport shows a different spelling or order, mention it in the comments when you order so we can discuss it with you before translation starts.

How long does the translation take?

The typical turnaround for a police certificate is 24 to 48 hours. An urgent option is available when you order.

Does my French police certificate need an apostille?

Home Affairs' instructions for France do not mention an apostille. If another authority asks for one, French notaries have issued apostilles since 1 May 2025. An apostille is translated as an extra page.

Can I get a printed copy?

Yes. The certified translation is always delivered as a PDF by email, and you can add a printed copy sent by post when you order.
