What you receive

A translation built to be checked

Your translation is compared line by line with your passport and other documents, so it has to be complete and exact.

  • Every field translated, including the notes recorded on the certificate.
  • Names exactly as on the certificate, in the same spelling and order.
  • The translator's NAATI stamp and certification statement, showing who translated it and their NAATI credential.
  • Our letterhead with our address and telephone number, so the translation can be traced back to us.

Getting your police certificate from Australia

You can do all of this from Australia.

When Home Affairs asks for one

Home Affairs may ask for a police certificate from every country where you lived for at least 12 months in the past 10 years since you turned 16. Some visas, such as the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), ask for them when you apply. Certificates are valid for 12 months from the date of issue.

What Home Affairs asks

The RCMP check, nothing else

Home Affairs accepts only the Certified Criminal Record Check from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, based on name and fingerprints. It will not accept certificates from provincial, regional or municipal police, including in Québec.

From Australia

Fingerprints first

Have all ten fingerprints taken on paper by an authorised agency, then send them through an accredited fingerprinting company in Canada, choosing "Visa/Border Crossing/Foreign Travel/Work". The RCMP fee is CAD 25 plus the company's fee.

Timing

Days, or months

The RCMP says a check with no match takes 3 business days or less; if it needs manual processing it can take up to 120 business days. Start early.

What Home Affairs asks of a translation

From the Department of Home Affairs' guidance on documents in languages other than English:

  • Provide the original document together with the English translation.
  • In Australia, use a translator accredited by NAATI.
  • Include the translator's full name, address and telephone number, and qualifications and experience in the language, all in English.

Our certified translations carry the translator's NAATI stamp and certification statement, on our letterhead with our address and telephone number.

What to send us
  • The official certificate as a PDF, or a clear colour scan where every line is readable.
  • Every page in one file, including the apostille if there is one.
  • Any spelling your names must match on your passport, written in the comments box.
  • The certificate exactly as issued, every page, including any apostille.
Questions

Frequently asked questions

My RCMP check is in English. Do I need a translation?

Only for parts that are not in English. Home Affairs asks for translations of documents that are not in English; send the check and we will tell you whether anything needs translating before you pay.

My name is spelled differently on my passport. What happens?

A certified translation reproduces names exactly as they are written on the certificate. If your passport shows a different spelling or order, mention it in the comments when you order so we can discuss it with you before translation starts.

How long does the translation take?

The typical turnaround for a police certificate is 24 to 48 hours. An urgent option is available when you order.

Does my Canadian police certificate need an apostille?

Home Affairs' instructions for Canada do not mention an apostille. Canada joined the Apostille Convention on 11 January 2024. An apostille is translated as an extra page.

Can I get a printed copy?

Yes. The certified translation is always delivered as a PDF by email, and you can add a printed copy sent by post when you order.
